Estimation of Standing Volume for Indigenous Tree Species
The volume of standing trees for most indigenous tree species can be estimated using the tables attached.
The attached volume tables are reproduced from "Tree Volume Equations for the Major Indigenous Species in New Zealand", New Zealand Forest Service Technical Paper Number 67 (JC Ellis 1979). These tables estimate the volume of standing trees from the measurement of Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) and merchantable height. There is no deduction for defect built into these tables. The estimated volume excludes the stump (typically about 30cm), and is an 'under bark' volume.
The four volume tables attached may be used to estimate the standing roundwood volume for indigenous timber species as follows:
- Mature Rimu
- These tables shall be used to estimate the volume of all podocarp species.
For example, rimu, totara, matai, kahikatea and miro.
- These tables shall be used to estimate the volume of all podocarp species.
- Mature Tawa
- These tables shall be used for tawa and all broadleaved hardwood species other than beech.
For example, rewa rewa, hinau, maire and taraire.
- These tables shall be used for tawa and all broadleaved hardwood species other than beech.
- Mature Beech
- These tables shall be used for all beech species.
- Mature Kauri
- These tables shall only be used for kauri.
A description of correct tree measurement follows.
Height and Diameter Measurement of Trees
Diameters in these tables are Diameters at Breast Height (DBH) measured over bark, in centimetres. Loose bark and vines should be removed prior to measurement
A tree's height should be measured to the top of the merchantable bole, recorded in metres. The height of the bole at either point where the bole branches into the crown of the tree, or the point where the bole reaches a minimum diameter of 15 centimetres, whichever is the larger.
Those not familiar with measurement of height and diameter of standing trees should refer to a forestry consultant or suitable textbook.
