SILNA Review

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) has appointed John Ruru and Maggie Bayfield to undertake a review of the 2002 South Island Landless Natives Act 1906 (SILNA) forests policy. The purpose of the review is to comprehensively assess the 2002 SILNA policy and to recommend future policy options. MAF has released a discussion document SILNA Forests: Review of the 2002 Policy and the Implementation Package to support the review.

Submissions close on Friday 25 September 2009.

In 2002, the Government initiated a policy to address unsustainable management of SILNA forests and allocated $19.691 million (including GST) over seven years to implement the policy package. Most of the funding was allocated to conservation protection negotiations with SILNA owners.
