Afternoon - 20 October 2005 Rotorua - Field Trip through the heartland of New Zealand's planted forest industry.

Purpose of Experts Meeting

The aim of the workshop will be to build understanding of the current approaches to LULUCF under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol, provide an opportunity to share national experiences and lessons learned, and discuss ways to address land use management and climate change issues. The discussion will focus on policy issues rather than technical matters.

Participation

The meeting will be open-ended and broad-based. Participants will be drawn from Annex I and developing countries to the UNFCCC process.

Languages

The working language of the meeting is English.

Meeting Outcomes

Any outcomes of the meeting will be reported in English.

Programme

The programme for the meeting has three central themes relating to the role of LULUCF in the climate change response.

Each session will open with presentations that focus on the different aspects of the theme. The presentations will be followed by ample time for discussion. There will be no breakout groups so that participants can participate in the full range of discussions and presentations. The presentations and any summaries will be integrated into the final report.

Tuesday 18 October

Morning

Theme 1 - Review of the treatment of LULUCF to date under the Convention, the Protocol and the IPCC guidelines.

Afternoon

Theme 2 - National experiences: lessons learned to date and cross-cutting issues. Issues to address could include implementation of GHG, domestic policies and cost.

Wednesday 19 October

Theme 3 - Land use management and climate change: issues and ways to address them - opportunities to reduce emissions and increase sinks. Potential issues participants may wish to discuss include sustainable forestry practices, addressing deforestation, bioenergy, agriculture, and land conversion to forest.

Thursday 20 October

Theme 4 - Summary of discussions

  • Next informal dialogue session

Afternoon

Fieldtrip

A field trip is planned on the afternoon of 20 October 2005. This field trip introduces the New Zealand planted forest estate and indigenous forests. Rotorua is located in the middle of the North Island and is New Zealand's planted forestry heartland. We will visit plots established as part of New Zealand Carbon Monitoring System situated in both planted and indigenous forests, and visit some of the areas wonderful thermal activity on the way. This fieldtrip will provide a useful overview of the New Zealand forest industry.
