Media Advisory – Media Conference Re Claimed Foot and Mouth Threat

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is holding a media conference at 6 am tomorrow morning (Wednesday 11th May) to provide an update on the claimed release of foot and mouth disease on Waiheke Island.

Assistant Director-General Biosecurity New Zealand Barry O’Neil will present the conference, along with police and New Zealand Food Safety Authority officials.

While it’s believed the claim is probably a hoax, MAF is taking prudent precautionary measures and has activated its disease management response systems.

As part of this precautionary response, a controlled area notice has been issued which restricts the movement of livestock and risk material on and off the island while the investigation proceeds. There are, however, no restrictions on people travelling to or from Waiheke Island.

The media conference is at:

Cameron Room, Terrace Entrance
Level 3
ASB House
101 – 103 The Terrace
Wellington

6 am, Wednesday 11 May, 2005

It is anticipated there will be regular update conferences throughout the day. Updates will be posted on the MAF website: www.maf.govt.nz
