Director-General
Murray joined MAF as Director-General in November 2001. He came to MAF from the Reserve Bank where he was Deputy Governor and Deputy Chief Executive.
He joined the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1976, working as an economic analyst. In 1984, Mr Sherwin was appointed Chief Manager of the Bank's International Department. He subsequently held Chief Manager positions in the Financial Markets Department and the Banking System Department.
During his career with the Reserve Bank, Mr Sherwin had a number of secondments, including to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris (1979); the Prime Minister's Advisory Group (1982-1983); and to the World Bank, Washington DC (1987-1989) where he was a member of the Board of Executive Directors. He was appointed Deputy Governor in June 1995. |

Deputy Director-General
Larry joined MAF in 1985 as Assistant Office Solicitor, advancing to become Director Legal Services. In 1993 he also took responsibility for Corporate Finance and in 1994 became ADG responsible for agricultural policy. As Director of Legal Services, Larry was heavily involved in legislation and implementation of quota management systems for fisheries and resolution of Maori fishing rights issues. He helped plan the establishment of the Ministry of Agriculture following the split from Fisheries, and was involved in pre-transition planning for the merger with the Ministry of Forestry. Larry was Acting Director-General of Agriculture and Forestry for six months. |

Raised on dairy, sheep and beef farms in Manawatu and the Bay of Plenty, Barry graduated from Massey University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, with distinction.
Between 1978 and 1983 Barry worked in a private veterinary mixed practice in Tauranga and travelled extensively overseas, experiencing veterinary practice in Asia and Europe.
From 1983 to 1990 Barry held various MAF Veterinary positions in MAF's Meat, Animal Health and Head Office divisions.
In 1991 Barry accepted a four-year diplomatic secondment with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as Veterinary Counsellor at the NZ Embassy in Brussels. In this position he was responsible for New Zealand's veterinary affairs in the European Community, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Moving back to New Zealand in 1994, he took up the position of Chief Veterinary Officer within MAF. With the formation of the Biosecurity Authority within MAF in 1999, Barry was appointed to the position of Group Director of the Authority. This position had responsibilities for MAF's animal, plant and forest health groups and animal welfare.
Following the release of The Biosecurity Strategy for New Zealand in August 2003, Barry was appointed as Assistant Director-General of the restructured Biosecurity New Zealand.
On 1 July 2007 Barry led a project to bring MAF Quarantine Service and Biosecurity New Zealand together into a single organisation to provide leadership of the New Zealand Biosecurity system. Barry is currently the Deputy Director-General of MAF Biosecurity New Zealand (MAFBNZ).

Paul Stocks
Assistant Director General, Strategy & Performance
Paul Joined MAF in 2004 as Director of the Biosecurity Strategic Unit, becoming Assistant Director General, Strategy & Performance in 2006.
Prior to joining MAF Paul spent 11 years at the New Zealand Treasury, where he held a number of management roles, with responsibility for a range of areas including Education, Market Interventions, and Tax Policy. Between 1997 and 1999 he was seconded to the role of Chief of Staff for the Minister of Finance.
Prior to joining Treasury Paul was a policy advisor at the Ministry of Health, and an advisor at the New Zealand Planning Council. |
