Sustainable management of New Zealand's forests
What is the Montreal Process?
The Montreal Process is an international process that reports on the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests. The process covers 12 countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Russian Federation, US and Uruguay. Collectively these countries account for 83 percent of the world’s temperate and boreal forests and 49 percent of the worlds total forest area.
This is New Zealand’s second Montreal Process report.
Globally there are 9 Sustainable Forest Management Criteria and Indicator processes with each process based around forest types and regions. More than 150 countries are engaged in these processes. The processes are evolving but all use a similar framework to cover 7 core sustainable forest management themes:
- Extent of forest resources
- Forest biological diversity
- Forest ecosystem health and vitality
- Productive functions of forests
- Protective functions of forests
- Socio-economic functions of forests
- Legal, policy and institutional frameworks.
