The future of the dairy industry regulations

MAF has been undertaking a Review of the Dairy Industry Restructuring (Raw Milk) Regulations.

Since conducting the last consultation round in April 2008, MAF has been considering competition issues within the dairy industry more widely.

The following consultation document considers the likelihood of the New Zealand dairy markets operating efficiently after the time the pro-competition provisions of the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001 are currently legislated to expire.

Compared to earlier consultations, this document focuses on the prospective expiry of the pro-competition regulatory regime contained in the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001, including the Raw Milk Regulations.

Public submissions

The consultation process finished on Friday 19 February 2010. MAF received twenty-three submissions. Copies of the submissions can be found here [PDF 2.95MB].

Next steps

MAF is analysing the submissions and a report will be presented to the Minister of Agriculture shortly. Policy decisions are likely to be sought later in the 2010 calendar year.
