  1. The area of forest owned or managed by major forest owners can be found in the New Zealand Industry booklet, Facts & Figures 2006/2007, page 5
    (see www.nzfoa.org.nz).
  2. Ownership is based solely on the ownership of the forest irrespective of the ownership of the land.
  3. Net stocked planted production forest area.
  4. Significant changes in forest ownership occurred during 2003, resulting in large areas of forest previously owned by public companies now being privately owned.
  5. “Privately owned” includes all privately owned forests. The legal entities included in this category are private companies, partnerships, individuals and trusts, which include Mäori trusts and incorporations.
  6. “Central government” forests are predominantly Crown-owned forests on Mäori leasehold land. These forests are managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
