The New MAF RM Update

An introduction by Michael Jebson, Director of the MAF Policy Sustainable Resource Use Group

It is with pleasure I introduce the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's new resource management publication MAF RM Update. Our aim is to keep you updated with topical and relevant RM issues affecting the land-based sectors and related industries. We welcome your feedback as well as suggestions for future articles.

The former Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry, which now make up MAF, were both actively involved in resource management issues affecting their respective sectors. Policy staff from both Ministries worked with regional and district councils and the sectors themselves to assist with the development of robust, efficient and effective environmental policies, plans and practices.

Building on this foundation, the new MAF Policy, which was established in March 1998, has established a team of regionally based senior analysts to continue this work. The merger has brought together practitioners with a wide range of skills and backgrounds, ensuring MAF's contribution to resource management is sound, robust, consistent and reflects the Government's goals and objectives for the land-based sectors.

To give a sharper focus to this work MAF Policy has also established the Sustainable Resource Use (SRU) Policy Group. This group co-ordinates MAF's RM work with local government and the sectors. On a national level the SRU team is also involved in a range of sector-related environmental policies, programmes and strategies including proposed changes to legislation. Some of these issues will be the subject of future articles.

The former Ministry of Forestry's publication Forestry RM Update focused on resource management issues involving the planted and indigenous forestry sectors. This new publication will build on the strengths of its predecessor but will encompass all land-based sectors and related industries.

This publication is an expression of MAF Policy's commitment to provide information, analysis and advice to the land-based sectors and associated industries. One of MAF's key policy objectives is to assist the sectors to perform to their full sustainable potential. MAF's environmental expertise will help regional and local government and the sectors develop policies and plans based on sound information which are practical and workable and achieve the desired environmental outcomes at least cost to the sectors and the nation.

I hope you find MAF RM Update interesting and relevant and I look forward to your feedback.
