Sustainable Development for New Zealand: Programme of Action

The Sustainable Development for New Zealand: Programme of Action was released on Friday 31 January. It will be available on a number of websites, including www.mfe.govt.nz.

The Programme of Action includes principles to guide Government policy development and sets out a work programme for action in four areas critical to New Zealand’s sustainable development:

  • water quality and allocation;
  • energy;
  • child and youth development; and
  • sustainable cities.

The programme of action is the Government’s view of the way forward and focuses on what government can contribute. It recognises that everyone has a role to play, and that there are many areas where the best results will depend on collaborative action. Partnerships are the basis of a sustainable development approach and are a key means for addressing the issues and implementing the programme of action.

The intent of taking a sustainable development approach is to help find innovative solutions to issues that provide the best outcomes for the economy, the environment and New Zealand’s social and cultural well-being.
