Issue 17 - November 2005
This edition of RM Update has a focus on sustainability issues which relate to forestry, both in New Zealand and overseas.
Some articles look at ways in which the sustainability of forestry practices is being encouraged, improved and ensured, for example; the recent successful prosecution under the Forests Act 1949 for the over-harvesting of native timber, the development of policy measures to address illegal logging problems, and the promotion of sustainable forestry in international forums.
This RM Update also illustrates a few of the ways in which forestry has the potential to address some of our most pressing environmental problems, such as soil erosion and climate change. The East Coast Forestry Project and the Permanent Forest Sinks Initiative are two innovative schemes which aim to promote both commercial forestry and conservation in order to gain environmental benefits. I hope you find it a good read.
