Hui for Maori Farmers, Growers and Foresters
A hui to encourage improved production and profit levels of Maori land-based businesses is being held in Rotorua next month.
He Hui Taumata Ahuwhenua Ngaherehere (the Maori Succeeding in Farming and Forestry Conference) is organised by MAF and Te Puni Kokiri and has been created for Maori Trusts, Incorporations and other organisations involved in farming, forestry or horticulture. The hui will also address the information needs of those businesses.
The conference programme includes first-hand reports about successful farming and forestry operations, panel discussions on critical issues, workshops led by key industry players and addresses by the Ministers of Agriculture and Maori Affairs.
Speakers to the hui include:
- Sam Awarau, Waipiro A25 Incorporation;
- Paul Morgan, Wakatu Incorporation;
- Peter Charleton, Parininihi Ki Waitotara Incorporation;
- George Asher, Lake Taupo and Rotoaira Forest Trusts;
- Whaimutu Dewes, Ngati Porou Whanui Forests Ltd;
- Edward Ellison, Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu;
- John Southerwood, Waitutu Incorporation;
- Kevin Prime, Ngati Hine Trust; and
- John Ruru, Mangatu Blocks Incorporation.
Panel discussion topics include: achieving best practice levels in Maori farming and forestry and the contribution of Maori women to land-based development, with speakers Ingrid Collins, Gloria Herbert, Gina Rudland, Hon Tariana Turia and Hon Georgina Te Heuheu.
The hui will also provide practical workshops on land information, Maori organics, farm improvement and governance and training.
