Regional Climate Outlook: December 2005-February 2006

The National Institute of Atmosphere and Water (NIWA) has released its three-monthly predictions for summer. Regional predictions for December to February are:

  • Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty: Above average temperatures are likely. Normal or above normal rainfall is expected with normal stream flows and soil moisture.
  • Central North Island, Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wellington: Above average temperatures are expected. Normal seasonal rainfall is likely. Below normal soil moisture levels and stream flows are likely.
  • Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa: Temperatures are forecast to be above average for summer. Normal or above normal rainfall is likely, with near normal soil and stream flows expected.
  • Nelson, Marlborough, Buller: Above average or average summer temperatures are expected, with normal rainfall likely. Normal or below normal soil moisture levels and below normal river flows are predicted for this region.
  • West Coast, Alps and Foothills, Inland Otago, Southland: Above average seasonal temperatures. Normal or below normal rainfall and below normal soil moisture levels and river flows are predicted.
  • Coastal Canterbury, East Otago: Above average summer temperatures are expected with normal rainfall. Below normal soil moisture levels and stream flows are expected.
