Taupo Trustees

Six founding trustees have been appointed to the Lake Taupo Protection Trust (a Council Controlled Organisation, or CCO). They will be responsible for managing an $81 million fund to improve the long-term health of the lake, primarily by reducing nitrogen pollution from surrounding farmland. The Trust is aiming at a 20 percent reduction in nitrogen entering the lake from both rural and urban sources

The fund has come from Environment Waikato, Taupo District Council and central government and will be used to encourage and assist land-use change, to purchase land in the Lake Taupo catchment and to finance other initiatives to assist landowners to reduce the nitrogen loss.

The trustees are: Gerald Fitzgerald, lawyer (Wellington); Colin Horton, agricultural consultant (Hamilton); John Hura of NZ Forest Mangers Ltd and chairperson of the Taupo-nui-a-tia Management Board (Turangi); John Kneebone, former president of Federated Farmers (Cambridge); Jeremy Rickman, accountant (Hamilton); and Susan Yerex, a founding member of Taupo Lakecare Group (Turangi).
