Appointments

Five Distinguished Companions of the NZ Order of Merit were awarded in the Queen's Birthday Honours: children's author Joy Cowley, Chief District Court Judge David Carruthers, Villa Maria winemaker George Fistonich, the pro-vice chancellor of Otago University's Division of Health Sciences Professor Linda Holloway, and the just-retired Ombudsman Judge Anand Satyanand.

Writer Bill Manhire and former politician Paul East are both made Companions of the NZ Order of Merit. Cricketer Chris Cairns, Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Beatrice Faumuina and publisher Geoff Walker have been made Officers of the NZ Order of Merit. Cinematographer Alun Bollinger, who worked on some of NZ's most successful films including Goodbye Pork Pie, Heavenly Creatures, and the Piano, has been made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit.

Doug Callander, an educationalist specialising in teaching children with behavioural and learning difficulties and also the Secretary-General of the NZ Korea War Veterans Association, has been made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit. No-one received the highest honour, the Order of NZ, because 20, the maximum allowed, have already been appointed.

NZ's next Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation will be career diplomat Crawford Falconer. NZ's next Ambassador to Brazil will be career diplomat Alison Mann. NZ's next Consul-General in Hong Kong will be career diplomat Julian Ludbrook. Raynor Asher has been appointed as a Judge of the High Court. Anna Johns is a new District Court Judge.

Dr Jan White, will take over as the Chief Executive of ACC in October this year.

Dr Peter O'Hara has been appointed to succeed Professor David Mellor as Chairperson of the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, from 1 November 2005.

John R Martin has been appointed to succeed Wyn Hoadley as Chairperson of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee, from 1 November 2005.

John Meeuwsen has been elected as Chair of the Industry Training Federation (ITF).

Paul Fitzharris has been appointed to the Board of Land Transport NZ.

The following three-year appointments have been to the Creative NZ Council and arts boards: Waaka Vercoe to the Council; Terry Snow to the Arts Board; and Marina Sciascia to the Te Waka Toi Board.

Dr Tim Mackle is the new Chief Executive of Dexcel Ltd.

Dairy InSight has elected Doug Leeder as its new Chairman and has two new directors, Alister Body and Ted Coats.

Frank Brenmuhl is the new Chairman of Dairy Farmers of NZ, the dairy industry wing of Federated Farmers of NZ (Inc).

Joanne Morris, Dr Monty Soutar, Gloria Herbert and Joseph Northover have been reappointed to the Waitangi Tribunal for three further years.
