Nga Rauru Agreement

The Crown and South Taranaki iwi have agreed in principle to a Treaty of Waitangi settlement package. The Nga Rauru Agreement in Principle is made up of a redress package which includes an agreed historical account and Crown acknowledgements (which will form the basis for a formal apology from the Crown), cultural redress including the transfer of five sites of significance to Nga Rauru, and a combination of cash and Crown owned land up to the value of $31 million.

It is hoped a Deed of Settlement can be drawn up by August. That would then be voted on by the people of Nga Rauru. A final settlement is conditional on an appropriate body being set-up to receive the settlement package and the passage through Parliament of the required law.
