FarmSafe Reaches Participation Milestone
Since 2003, 20,000 farmers throughout NZ have attended one or more local FarmSafe programmes. FarmSafe is an ACC and Federated Farmers initiative, which aims to reduce agriculture and horticulture accidents by providing quality training, assessment and services in the community. It is run by a consortium which includes Agriculture ITO, Agriculture NZ and Telford Rural Polytechnic.
A one-day introductory programme, FarmSafe Awareness, was launched in October 2003. Subsequently, in 2004, two further programmes were launched - FarmSafe Plans and FarmSafe Skills (a series of interactive workshops that focus on practical skills such as ATV riding, using chainsaws, driving tractors and riding motorbikes). In 2005, the FarmSafe Skills Agrichemical Approved Handler course was launched for farmers and growers who store and use agrichemicals. Participants who successfully complete this course gain an Approved Handler certification ahead of the 1 January 2007 HSNO compliance date.
FarmSafe programmes are industry-specific and delivered locally by a network of Regional Co-ordinators and a dedicated Project Manager. To find out more about FarmSafe call a Regional Co-ordinator on 0800 545 747 |
