Call for Candidates

"If you are passionate about your community and want to stand as a candidate in the local authority or district health board elections in October, start campaigning now," says Local Government NZ's Acting President, Margaret Shields.

"Many people may not be aware that the role of councils has changed dramatically. Local government's role is to create a vision and direction for their community, identify and respond to local needs, and act as `smart purchasers' of local public goods and services.

"District health boards have the responsibility of allocating funding for health and disability services in your region. There are 21 boards in total and all are responsible for ensuring that your district's health and disability needs are catered for.

"Councils and district health boards develop local solutions for local issues, taking into account factors such as geography, diversity of communities, the environment, economic opportunities and the health and social well-being of their communities. Both have to represent the views of their community, and at the same time, balance many different needs," says Ms Shields.

"Many people have views about what their local council should or shouldn't be doing or how funding for health services should be allocated in their region. If you want to play a part in the significant decisions that affect your community, now is the time to act.

"If you want to make a difference in your community, now is the time to consider standing in this year's elections. We need elected members of different ages, ethnicities and genders to reflect the diversity of NZ communities."

Nominations for candidates for over 1000 positions available in local authorities and district health boards across NZ open on 23 July 2004. However, Local Government NZ encourages prospective candidates to begin campaigning as early as possible.
