NZ Income Survey, June 2005 Quarter*

According to recent Statistics NZ figures:

  • Average weekly gross income from all sources was $586 in the June 2005 quarter, up 5.8 percent from the June 2004 quarter.
  • Average weekly income from all sources in the June 2005 quarter was $738 for males and $442 for females.
  • Average weekly gross income from all sources was highest for people aged 45 to 49, at $817.
  • Average weekly income from all sources in the June 2005 quarter was $637 for European/Pakeha, $471 for Maori, $412 for Pacific peoples and $415 for the "Other" ethnic group. (Note: The Maori, Pacific peoples and "Other" ethnic groups have proportionally more people in the younger age groups, particularly the 15- to 24-year age group, which has lower average earnings. Most of those aged 65 years and over are in the European/Pakeha ethnic group, for whom the major source of income is NZ Superannuation).
  • The main contributors to the growth in average weekly income from all sources were increases in average weekly income from wages and salaries and income from investments. (Average weekly income from wages and salaries for all people, not just those in paid employment, increased by $33, from $348 to $381, while average weekly income from investment income for all people increased from $22 to $31).
  • Average weekly wage and salary income for those in paid employment was up 7.6 percent from the June 2004 quarter.
  • Average hourly earnings were $19.30, up 5.8 percent from the June 2004 quarter.

* All figures in this release refer to gross (before tax) income. People aged less than 15 years are excluded from the survey.
