Vertebrate Pest Control Regulations - Consultation

The Pesticides Board is proposing to the Government to make changes to the Pesticides (Vertebrate Pest Control) Regulations 1983. The Regulations cover the sale and use of controlled pesticides, which are mainly used for managing possums and rabbits. The Regulations need to be changed to help ensure the safe use of pest-control poisons. The main proposed changes are:

  • requiring the supply and use of all controlled pesticides to be traceable, and that suppliers and operators keep these records for at least 3 years;
  • increased notification requirements warning of controlled pesticides use, both before and after an application or placement;
  • a 2-year expiry date on all operator licences;
  • increased application fees so that the costs of processing applications and providing training and examination services can be recovered; and
  • providing for approved organisations to purchase 1080.
MAF would like to hear from people who may be affected by these proposed changes. If you would like to have your say please supply your name and postal address as soon as possible to Maree Zinzley, Manager Customer Services, MAF Food ACVM Group, PO Box 2526, Wellington, fax (04) 460 8771, or email zinzleym@maf.govt.nz (note: consultation ends Friday, 23 February 2001)
