Mobile Surgery Bus
From about August this year a mobile surgery bus will travel to rural hospitals to perform elective day surgery. The bus will be staffed by local and travelling staff, and will use existing hospital facilities for recovery. It would be equipped to perform a range of day surgery, including vasectomies, breast biopsies, tooth extractions, cataracts, hernias and varicose veins operations.
Six South Island and seven North Island hospitals with secondary facilities will host the mobile surgery bus, and more could be added in the future. The bus will visit one day every five weeks. The North Island centres are Dargaville, Kawakawa, Wairoa, Hawera, Taumarunui, Rawene and Te Puia, and in the South Island the bus will visit Balclutha, Buller, Clyde, Gore, Oamaru and Queenstown.
