NZ Internet Voting First. The first people in NZ to be elected to official positions via the Internet began work recently. In October 2000, senior leaders of the Auckland University of Technology's Student Association were elected by their fellow students over the Internet.

Eldernet - www.eldernet.co.nz - contains information for older people including community groups, home services, retirement villages, residential/resthome care, and private hospitals.

Horticulture Statistics - www.maf.govt.nz/statistics - Selected fruit and vegetables statistics have recently been added to the MAF website. Data as at June 2000 will be added on 27 February when Statistics NZ releases the provisional results of the 2000 Agricultural Production Survey - Horticultural. You can find this data on a new web page set up for Horticulture/Fruit outdoor/Vegetables outdoor/Vegetables indoor. A time series of the fruit and vegetables data can be viewed on the Net or downloaded in an Excel table.

Website Expenditure - Tax Deductibility. IRD has published a statement on the treatment of expenditure incurred in creating a website that is to be used to derive gross income. Briefly, the position is as follows:

  • domain name - capita, not depreciable;
  • HTML or other programming - capital asset, depreciable at the rate of 40% diminishing value or 30% straight line;
  • ongoing costs of updating or adding information are deductible; and
  • reconstruction or functional improvement to a website is capital expenditure.

Questions for the Year - www.edge.org/documents/questions/q2001.html - Once a year, John Brockman of New York, a writer and literary agent who represents many scientists, poses a question in his online journal, 'The Edge', and invites the thousand or so people on his mailing list to answer it. At the end of 1998, for example, he asked readers to name the most important invention in 2,000 years; the question generated 117 responses as diverse as hay and birth control pills. This year, Mr. Brockman offered a question about questions: "What questions have disappeared, and why?" Some of the responses were: "Has History Ended?"; "How do people differ in the ways they think and learn?"; "Why are humans smarter than other animals?"; "Where Does Love Come From?"; and "Why is life so full of suffering?".

US Combat Artists - www.pbs.org/theydrewfire - More than 100 US servicemen and civilians were "combat artists" during World War II. Their largely forgotten work is now available online.
