Pipfruit Deregulation Gets OK
The Government has confirmed it is prepared, in principle, to deregulate the pipfruit industry. The idea is to give apple and pear growers a choice of exporters, who would compete on an equal footing with the statutory agency body, ENZA. Currently, growers must sell their produce in overseas markets through ENZA unless cleared by an independent permits committee.
A likely option would be to form a product group attached to the Horticultural Export Authority (HEA), which could help protect the value of "Brand NZ" for all exporters. Under the HEA model, growers and exporters would form a joint government-recognised product group to handle roles such as approving export permits, and monitoring and approving export marketing strategies.
Further consultation should take place soon.
