Mergers
DWI/Social Policy Merger
The Department of Work and Income and the Ministry of Social Policy are to merge to form a new agency called the Ministry of Social Development. The new Ministry of Social Development would be responsible for advising the Government on social policy, as well as delivering benefits and other social services to the community.
The Government would not be re-advertising everyone's jobs, nor would it be spending millions of dollars on rebranding. The two agencies employ a total of about 5000 people.
Human Rights to Merge with Race Relations
Moves to merge the offices of the Human Rights Commissioner and the Race Relations Conciliator have been started by the Government. It's planned to have legislation passed by December to pave the way for the merger next year.
There will be a separate Race Relations Conciliator, but within the Human Rights Commission office. The offices of the Health and Disability, Children's and Privacy Commissioners may also be merged into the office later, to co-ordinate all human rights issues in the same area.
