Community Business Assistance
Details of an $8.5 million pilot project providing wage subsidies and support for community group-run business ventures were announced recently. Community Employment Organisations (CEOs) have been set up to provide assistance to community groups to help them develop enterprises and employ jobless people through a mix of advisory support, financial assistance and wage subsidies. Any such ventures must be new and not in competition with the private sector.
Six CEOs were already providing 64 jobs, and several more proposals are in the pipeline. Projects currently in place include installing energy efficient measures in low-income households, and providing cheap school lunches in low decile schools.
