Guidelines for Childrens' TV Advertising

New voluntary guidelines for advertising and sponsorship during children's television (in the form of a booklet called 'Getting it Right') have been released. The guidelines, drawn up by the Television Broadcasters' Council (TBC), are an agreement between, for example, TV2, TV3, advertisers, NZ On Air and public interest groups.

The new rules will mean that individual commercials cannot be repeated more than three times during certain time periods in children's programming on weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Also, ads will only play twice within any hour during those same times.

The new rules also confirm the existing policy that bans advertising during pre-school programmes and limits commercials to 10 minutes per hour during scheduling for children under 14.
