Pathogen Pathways – Soil Risk Index
3. Background
As the soil specialist, Landcare Research has made significant contribution to the MAF-funded PTRRP and was able to use concurrent FRST funding into microbial transport through a range of New Zealand soils to enhance outcomes of the PTRRP. During earlier phases of the PTRRP it became clear that knowledge gained synergistically from the Landcare Research FRST funded programme and the PTRRP could be modelled and presented spatially at a national scale. Internationally, this approach is uncommon. More commonly, researchers have modelled small areas of land using data-intense models. For many of the model inputs there are few reliable data, which makes extrapolation on a nation-wide basis, difficult.
