Community Irrigation Fund

Who can apply to the Community Irrigation Fund?

We welcome applications from:

  • promoters of community water storage and/or irrigation schemes that have already completed a feasibility study (or similar). A community scheme is one that is initiated, developed and used by multiple members of a rural community, primarily for irrigation; and
  • local government (including the Regional and all relevant Territorial Authorities) and/or an entity undertaking a local government-led water strategy on behalf of local government.

Applications for 2010/11 close on Monday 22 February 2010. Applicant groups must be New Zealand-registered legal entities.

Community schemes

Applications are particularly welcome from promoters of storage-based schemes who can demonstrate that their proposed scheme represents a good use of the CIF's money. Storage-based schemes are potentially a better form of adaptation to water shortages than non-storage based schemes, and may also provide environmental benefits (e.g. flushing flows).

Feasibility study

Before making an application, you should complete a feasibility study, or similar, that includes details of:

  • proposed scheme type/design;
  • location and expected irrigable area;
  • estimated scheme costs and potential revenue;
  • estimated environmental benefits and impacts (including from irrigated land);
  • estimated social and cultural benefits and impacts;
  • current and projected investor and community support levels; and
  • indicative consentability of scheme.

Water strategies

Applications are particularly welcome from local government entities that can demonstrate the need for a water strategy in their area that considers the potential for rural irrigation-related infrastructure.

The applicant must demonstrate who they have consulted with, and included other parties in the proposed project.
