7.2 Evidence of change
These changes are becoming apparent in a number of ways:
- farming is increasingly defined as a business. No one doubts that business methods are necessary, but most farm families consider farming to be more than a business. There is little in most other business that compares to the emotional links many farmers have with the land.
- women have been working in paid employment away the farm for a number of years, but expectations of more equality between husband and wife are emerging.
- it is now assumed children will be treated equally in terms of succession; and this has become the ideal, though many can not afford to do it.
- succession arrangements are changing and farmers are staying longer on their farms.
What are the implications of these changes for sustainability?
