9.1 Support for rural self-help initiatives
Report availability recommendation
One of the main requests made by a number of people is for this report to be made available to people in the mid-Rangitikei, therefore enabling the extension of ideas and further examination of the implications. The vision is for people in smaller groups to have further opportunities to discuss the findings, then, hopefully, to initiate action in their own communities.
Focus communities recommendation
To support the establishment of at least two focus communities for comparative purposes, which would provide the following:
- discussion of ideas on a regular basis on farming in context and farming in transition
- empowerment of local communities to manage their own affairs
- a focus or vehicle for community involvement, and action
- a link between different sectors
- a means of monitoring change over time
- a feed-in mechanism for people at grass roots to influence and participate in the development of policy and decision making (see community facilitators
Community facilitators recommendation
To explore the concept of community facilitators, and their appointment to fulfil the following functions:
- to act as a conduit for local concerns and action
- to act as a catalyst and provocateur for self-support initiatives (nb the health success)
- to liaise with focus communities, government agencies, business and professional communities, and local groups and residents
- to assist people to make the mindset leap required to cope and deal with significant changes
In the Rangitikei area funding for this could be assisted by the Dudding Trust [ a resource used to fund many community initiatives and activities in the Rangitikei]
