4. Papers on social indicators of sustainability
Several papers on the social indicators of sustainable agriculture have been undertaken for MAF and some have been published (SONZA and the proceedings of the 2nd Joint conference of the New Zealand of Geographical Society and the Institute of Australian Geographers). Many of these papers have evolved from the basic work undertaken by the Department of Statistics and UNESCO in the late seventies, and more recent work attempting to measure well-being which has arisen from Agenda 21 and the efforts of local government to monitor and measure social, economic and environmental change.
A report on the Clutha Valley social indicators of sustainability project is in process of publication. This is a project driven very much by a local community interest group in an effort to establish measures of their well-being in terms of their access to basic services, and their livelihoods (farming and other businesses). The work complements activities conducted by other agencies to measure bio-physical statuses.
