5. Experience of Women in Co-Management Land-Care Groups
(MAF Policy Technical Paper 98/6)

This study is one of a number of reports on identifying and removing barriers to the participation of women in decision-making in local organisations, particularly those which have a formal or official structure. The research can be seen to apply equally to participation by Maori. While the messages from this research are of particular interest to people concerned with resource management issues, such as those interested in establishing and operating Landcare Groups, they are of universal relevance to government, private organisations and individuals.

The report documents how community-based groups incorporate (or not) issues of importance to women into their vision and objectives and action plans. Two Landcare groups are analysed in some detail. The earlier women are involved in the planning process, the more successful the group is in establishing a holistic and inclusive process. The report has ideas for increasing gender awareness, and lists strategies to address women’s interests and needs.
