2.5 - RURAL TOURISM

Provision of Information on Rural Tourism Projects

Originally conceptualised in terms of the opportunities inherent in using farm tourism as a risk management strategy and opportunity to diversify, rural and farm tourism is now seen as a major export earner which is providing rural areas with a change to broaden their economic base, build up employment and enterprise development opportunities, attract and keep people and services within rural communities.

A manual has been compiled to provide rural people considering entering the rural tourism industry' with a checklist of actions and skills required. The manual also lists useful contacts in the tourism industry who can help rural people help themselves. Published as MAF Policy Technical Paper 94/16 Thinking of Starting in Rural Tourism? A Resource Book with over 3,000 copies distributed (two reprintings arranged with NZ Tourism Industry Association and Community Employment Group sponsorship).

Rural Resources have participated in a series of rural tourism facilitation seminars, and have been working with the Ministry of Commerce (Tourism Policy), the NZ Tourism Board and the Community Employment Group to raise awareness of rural and farm tourism opportunities.
