Foreword
This review of Southland District Economic Development 1991 to 2000 was undertaken as part of the regional familiarisation programme - and was initiated before the current interest in regional economic development.
The project describes initiatives undertaken in Southland by community groups, local authorities, and with some central government contribution.
The paper details the types of development activities undertaken, some of the factors behind the initiatives, and what the principal motivators were. An evaluation of how successful the projects have been in contributing to the economic base of the Southland region and maintaining population is presented.
Given the current interest in regional economic development, the experiences outlined in the paper are likely to be useful to all persons with an interest in regional economic development, including local and central government.
I encourage people with an interest to read the paper, and to direct any further enquiries to one of the two authors - Mrs Trish Burborough or Dr Parnell Trost. They can be contacted at MAF Policy, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, PO Box 5648, Dunedin, telephone (03) 477 8454, email burborought@maf.govt.nz, or trostp@maf.govt.nz.
