8. Potential Areas for Economic Development

Areas where future economic development is planned:

  • Further processing of products already produced in the region (e.g. wood and aluminium). In the forestry sector there is potential for increased re-manufacturing and there is interest in downstream processing, such as furniture manufacturing.
  • Adding design value to products (e.g. paua shell veneer rather than low grade trinkets).
  • Bulbs and floriculture (estimates of potential employment range up to 20,000 jobs).
  • Bio-oil from cops such as meadow foam.
  • Aquaculture.
  • Tourism.
  • Conference Southland.
  • Trails (e.g. heritage trails).
  • Activities and events (e.g. World Clay Bird Shooting Champs).
  • Food products (e.g. Movenpick ice cream).
  • Nickel smelter.
  • Silica refinery.
  • Mineral extraction.
  • Call centre industry.
  • Creative community.
