FOREWORD
An Inter-industry table reflects the structure of an economy at a particular point in time, by portraying the average relationships between industries, given the technology existing at the time.
Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) have published, at five-yearly intervals, inter-industry tables from 1971/72 to 1986/87.
The process is costly, as it necessitates extension surveys of industries and consequential analysis. Over time, SNZ have increased the level of industry disaggregation, with 184 industries in the 1986/87 table.
Knowing that so many structural changes to the economy took place since 1986/87, MAF Policy commissioned Geoff Butcher to update the 1986/87 tables to 1991. These were published in MAP Policy Technical Paper 93/19.
Geoff Butcher proposed that productivity changes over time also be examined as a separate study. Thus, this Technical Paper reports on the findings of a study that looked at productivity changes from 1976/77 to 1990/91,
The project had appeal to MAF Policy and is seen as contributing to one of the outcomes expected by the Minister of Agriculture from MAF Policy's outputs.
"Benefit to all New Zealanders from the resource base for agriculture being used in the most productive and sustainable way.".
The research findings are presented in this technical paper for wider public interest and debate. A reasonable understanding of input-output analysis is required by the reader.
