Improving estimates of growth, recruitment and mortality for selected indigenous forest species
Operational research project code: SUS 702
MAFs Indigenous Forestry Unit requires simple models for the prediction of growth of a number of key indigenous species. It is proposed that these be constructed from existing data sets (e.g. National Vegetation System) for use by the IFU and practitioners based on simple graphical depictions of growth rates (diameter growth) for key species from the podocarp, beech and broadleavedhardwood groups.
The models will be simple to apply and will be incorporated in MAF Standards and Guidelines, forming a basis for making species growth predictions in average and optimum managed stand scenarios. These will be available to forest owners and consultants.
The models will address simplified growth for key species; size and level of competition. Similar analysis could be done for recruitment and mortality.
