Escape from Wardang Island

Trials designed to study transmission of the virus under conditions more closely resembling those in the wild began on Wardang Island off the coast of South Australia in March 1995.

Initial results had suggested that the virus may not spread easily, but on 1 October 1995 it was found to have infected rabbits outside the fenced enclosure on the island. Subsequently, on 6 October, it was found to have infected rabbits in another warren outside the enclosure system. Immediate steps were taken to destroy all rabbits on the island, in line with previously agreed procedures.

On 17 October a dead rabbit discovered at Point Pearce, on the mainland, was found to have died of the disease. Every effort was then made to eliminate rabbits in the area to stop the spread. While this appeared at first to have been successful, it was confirmed on 1 November that the disease had broken out amongst rabbits at Yunta, and in the Flinders Ranges. It is now widespread in South Australia and has been reported in Victoria.

How it dispersed from Wardang Island is unknown, but bush flies are suspected of being carriers.

In April 1996, the Australian Federal Government decided that further testing should be carried out before consideration could be given to a controlled release of the disease. Tests are being carried out on people who have worked closely with the disease, and diseased rabbits, to see whether they have responded in any way. Wombats, echidnas (spiny ant-eaters) and koalas are also being tested for susceptibility to the disease.

New Zealand concerns about the potential impact of the disease have focused on the possibility that kiwi and short-tailed bats could be susceptible. Testing these species for susceptibility before the disease occurs here was seen as imperative, as test results will determine the nature of the official response if the disease is introduced either by chance or design.
