| Objective Title:Keys for Noctuidae Research Leaders:Dr D Bejakovich Institution:New Zealand Plant Protection Centre, MAF Quality Management |
Aim:To develop diagnostic keys for Noctuidae adults and larvae by:
- the existing keys for New Zealand species with some data from other countries;
- keys will be enhanced by the inclusion of species which have been introduced into New Zealand since the existing keys were published;
- will concentrate on the most important genera for New Zealand;
- Lepidoptera expert John Dugdale will be sub-contracted;
- specimens will be obtained from existing PPC collections or from internal and international networks; these will be used to check the new keys; and
- resultant keys will be published in the form of laboratory manuals.

| Objective Title:Multiple entry morphometric key for wingless adult aphids Research Leaders:Dr D Teulon Institution:Crop and Food |
A "multiple entry" diagnostic key using morphological characters will be developed for wingless adult aphids. A multiple entry approach is to be preferred in comparison to a dichotomous key as it simulates the way an "expert" would identify an organism and is generally simpler and easier to use than a dichotomous key. Selected wingless adult aphids from major crops including cereals, vegetables, floriculture, and fruit crops in New Zealand will be included. Aphids not yet found in New Zealand but considered to be of quarantine importance will also be included.
