8.4 Semi-Arid Land

8.4.1

Objective Title:Managing information and knowledge for the management of tussock grasslands

Programme Leader:Mr W Allen and Dr O Bosch

Institution/Business: Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research

Aim:To create a learning environment which maximised the availability of quantitative and qualitative knowledge for different levels of decision-making, through the continual enhancement of a decision support system (DSS) module on tussock grassland (including hieracium) management, thereby facilitating the adoption of more sustainable management practices, by:

  • community understanding of the context in which data and information is provided, to maximise its value (transforming data and information into useful knowledge), and to reduce community conflict through workshops;
  • the DSS module with new useful knowledge;
  • appropriate links and pathways within the DSS module to ensure its relevance to end-users; and
  • and documenting the lessons learnt through this participatory approach, to improve the adoption of new technologies and practices, in this and other biophysical and social settings.

8.4.2

Objective Title: Indicators and condition assessment tools

Research Leader: Mr R Gibson and Dr O Bosch

Institution/Business: Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research

Aim:Complete the development of user-friendly tools to allow land managers to measure their progress towards sustainable management, and to provide a basis for active adaptive management by:

  • analysis and construction of condition assessment models from data that has already been collected in conjunction with the Rural Futures Trust during the 1995/96 summer; and
  • where possible, generic models for the entire high country using existing data sets and personal knowledge of researchers. Field checks will be carried out to confirm applicability of constructed models.
