6. Promoting industry and rural community performance

The broader economic and social environment significantly affects New Zealand's ability to produce quality products and take advantage of opportunities offered by international markets. This category provides information that will assist in developing and implementing policies that encourage the development of an efficient domestic business environment and viable rural communities.

6.1 ICP 501

Programme Title:
Industry profiles and impediments to growth for emerging industries.
Programme Leader: Glen Greer
Institution: AERU, Lincoln University and Agriculture New Zealand

Programme Goal: To obtain and analyse information on the structures, impediments to growth and strategies for overcoming those impediments of emerging industries, with emphasis on post-farm gate.

Objective Title: Development of industry profile.

Research Leader: Glen Greer

Description:

Selection of sample of emerging industries and compilation of a statistical profile on those industries.

  • Definition of terms and characteristics which may be used to differentiate between groups of emerging industries.
  • Selected industries (8-10) are likely to include a mixture of production-driven and market-led industries.
  • Emerging industries of the past will be identified for comparison with current emerging industries.
  • Selected industries will be profiled and impediments to post-farm gate activity included.

Reference sources will include company reports and publications, interviews with representatives from industry organisations, telephone interviews with industry participants and where possible "expert opinion" will be sought.

Objective 2

Objective Title: In-depth analysis of impediments.

Research Leader: Glen Greer

Description

Compilation and analysis of detailed information on performance, impediments to improved performance and key issues for a selection of industries.

The final report will comprise the detailed information on industry structure, direction, strengths and weaknesses (SWOT analysis), processing and marketing issued and constraints, barriers to entry or exit, market promotion and funding, seller or buyer concentrations and any government imposed impediments for each of the selected industries.

6.2 ICP 502

Programme Title:
Modelling future wood supply from New Zealand's planted production forests.
Programme Leader: Steve Wakelin
Institution: Forest Research

Programme Goal: To provide updated forecasts of wood supply from New Zealand's planted production forests at a regional and national level using the latest data.

Objective 1

Objective Title: National and regional wood supply forecasts.

Research Leader: Steve Wakelin

Description:

This project will produce a new set of national and regional wood supply forecasts in the year 2000 based on the latest National Exotic Forest Description (NEFD) data. These forecasts will replace the 1996 NEFD forecasts, which are now dated.

Forecasts of future wood supply from New Zealand's planted production forests will be used for providing policy advice on the implications of the large increases in wood supply expected over the next decade. The information will also be made available to agencies involved in providing infrastructure such as transport and energy and to demonstrate the long-term sustainability of planted forest production to New Zealand's trading partners.
