7 Facilitating resource management

This category provides information that will assist in developing and implementing policies on biophysical factors that influence sustainable agricultural practices namely food safety, environmental effects due to agriculture and horticulture, and animal welfare issues driven by domestic concerns. A key driver for all three issues has been the urbanisation of the population that has isolated the majority of New Zealanders from contact with agriculture. Negative aspects of farming are open to exploitation by the media. Increasingly, the public is demanding assurances from farmers and food processors about the manner in which food is produced. "Quality products from a quality environment" encapsulates these concerns. The animal welfare proposals covered under this category have been separated out into the combined chapter eight for ease of access.

7.1 FRM 402

Programme Title:
East Coast Forestry Project: Comparison of alternative mechanisms.
Programme Leader: Dr Chris Phillips
Institution: Landcare Research

Programme Goal: To review the literature on the erosion control performance of selected revegetation management strategies to provide a basis for objectively evaluating tenders (proposals) to the East Coast Forestry

Objective 1

Objective Title: Effectiveness of vegetation for erosion-control.

Research Leader: Dr Chris Phillips

Description:

Review current knowledge on plant performance for erosion control in the East Coast region to support the development of a methodology that will assist the ECFP manager in evaluating bids in terms of meeting erosion reduction goals.

The outcome will be an evaluation methodology based on current scientific understanding that will treat bids fairly in terms of meeting the primary ECFP requirement of sediment reduction through erosion control by vegetation whilst ensuring the best use of central government funds.

At time of print there are contracts that have yet to be negotiated for a large proportion the allocated monies in this area. These will be reported on in the Research Results Report produced at the end of the financial year.
