Kiwifruit

Model Description

This report covers kiwifruit orchards in the major growing areas of New Zealand. The model budget represents an established owner-operator property in the Bay of Plenty, an area that produces around 80% of the New Zealand kiwifruit crop.

The text reflects all kiwifruit-growing districts, with a brief specific comment for each. Financial data relates to the year ended 31 March.

Kiwifruit income spans two financial years, with the residual payment for each crop occurring in the following financial year. For example, final payments on the crop harvested in May 2002 will occur in the 2003/04 year.

Key Points

  • Kiwifruit growers had a good year in 2002/03 with higher revenue for their 2002 crop offsetting lower yields.
  • Revenue for the 2002 crop was significantly higher than growers expected at harvest, and above the 2001 crop return by 25% for green and 33% for gold.
  • The model orchard produced a net trading profit of over $62,000 for the 2002/03 year and forecasts nearly $64,000 for the 2003/04 year.
  • For their 2003 crop, growers expect similar yields and lower revenue due to the influence of exchange rate movements.
  • Late fruit maturity has delayed harvest of the 2003 crop, but rapid shipping to market means volumes sold so far are similar to last year.
