Export Berryfruit
This section comments on export berryfruit crops grown throughout New Zealand. Regions where berryfruit crops are concentrated are Auckland, Waikato, Horowhenua, Nelson and Canterbury.
Key Points
- Berryfruit crop yields recovered in 2002/03, after favourable weather at flowering and over harvest.
- Average or above average yields have resulted in an improvement in gross margins for berryfruit crops. There has been little or no improvement in product prices on a dollar per kilogram basis.
- Increases in fruit supply in the blueberry and blackcurrant industries will cause bottlenecks for marketers in the next few years. There is insufficient capacity to develop new market opportunities in which to profitably sell the predicted increase in product supply.
- The strawberry industry is working actively to ensure that an international "level playing field" is maintained while reducing dependence on methyl bromide use for ground fumigation.
