Pastoral Monitoring Report 2008

The Pastoral Monitoring Report 2008 is compiled annually by MAF to help create a prosperous, sustainable and innovative pastoral sector in New Zealand. This report examines the relationship between the pastoral sector's financial results and its sustainability and productivity. It also provides general information about the production and financial status of dairy, deer, and sheep and beef farms as well as the broader trends, issues and sector concerns.

A range of environmental and management indicators are included in the farm monitoring programme which collects data from a range of farm types throughout New Zealand and is supplemented with farmer and industry expectations. One use of this data is to produce the models in this report.

As this report went to press there was significant uncertainty about the world economic situation which makes the outlook for 2008/08 more difficult to predict. Faced with a great deal of uncertainty, farmers are expected to take a more cautious approach in the year ahead.

Part 1 of the report:

  • compares the levels of profitability between the dairy, deer and sheep and beef sectors and contrasts the variation in actual and expected profitability of each sector over the next year;
  • looks at the effects of the widespread and severe drought during 2007/08;
  • calculates nitrate leaching and greenhouse gas emissions from the model pastoral farms;
  • examines a range of environmental and management indicators collected from farmers as part of the farm monitoring programme.

In Part 2, 3 and 4, the report presents models that typify average dairy, deer and sheep and beef farms throughout New Zealand. Each model presents budget figures for the 2007/08 season, and a budget for the 2008/09 season.
