Introduction

As part of a programme of work to seek carbon dioxide reduction opportunities in the agricultural sector, and in light of interest by research-funding bodies to identify energy projects in the agricultural sector that they may wish to support, a workshop was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the New Zealand Climate Change Office, the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority, Dairy InSight and Meat and Wool New Zealand.

The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • take stock of past and current work of government agencies and organisations; and
  • identify gaps and key opportunities within the agricultural sector for both energy supply and demand issues (forestry was not covered).

Key presentations were provided on current government policy, past research, and overviews of current work, followed by a presentation on a regional energy initiative. Additional presentations were given by:

  • organisations representing the various research-funding bodies;
  • agricultural sector bodies;
  • two energy companies;
  • private sector companies and consultants; and
  • University and Crown Research Institute research providers.

A summary of the day’s proceedings was provided by Professor Ralph Sims, Massey University. Key points raised during the day were briefly discussed at the end of the meeting, and are also presented.
