Ministry for the Environment Sustainable Management Fund - Roger Lincoln

Climate Change Funding

Your council and local community groups can access funding for initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions via the Ministry for the Environment's Sustainable Management Fund.

Applications for stage 1 of the next funding round for the Sustainable Management Fund closed on 1 November 2004.

Purpose

The purpose of the Sustainable Management Fund (SMF) is to:

  • support the community, industry, iwi and local government in practical environmental initiatives.

This means that:

  • good ideas from all sectors of the community will be considered;
  • parties benefiting from the project outputs will own and participate in the projects.

Objectives

The objectives of the SMF are to make a positive difference to the environment by funding projects:

  • that fit under one of the following four topic areas:
    • Freshwater management Initiatives;
    • 'Adopt A' Schemes;
    • Urban Sustainability;
    • Community-level Climate Change.
  • that strengthen proactive partnerships between the community, industry, iwi and local government;
  • that involve the community in practically focused "action for the environment".

Community-level Climate Change

The Ministry for the Environment is leading the inter-departmental work programme on climate change through the New Zealand Climate Change Office.

In order to achieve more significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions at the local level, the next funding round of the Sustainable Management Fund will prioritise proposals achieving community-level climate change objectives.

Community-level initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are likely to focus on transport, waste and energy use. They may involve a wide range of activities including: encouraging cycle use or cycle pathways; enhancing access to carpooling or public transportation; energy efficiency and conservation projects for households, councils, and businesses; community composting projects; waste minimisation projects which help save electricity; renewable energy projects; community awareness programmes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and a range of other climate-friendly projects that are community-based.

Changes to the Sustainable Management Fund

Recent changes have been made to the SMF to better reflect the Ministry for the Environment's priorities. The changes are:

  • a greater emphasis on community-level initiatives;
  • funded projects will align with the Ministry's strategic priorities;
  • priority will be given to one-year projects (rather than multi-year funding).

Next Funding Round

Stage 1 of the next funding round for the Sustainable Management Fund closed 1 November 2004.
