Pre and Post 1990 Forest Distinction
- "Restricting carbon credits to newly afforested areas will enable the owners of those forests to derive an income additional to or in place of the harvested wood value. The likely international price of carbon absorption could yield values equivalent or in excess of the harvested wood value with little or none of the costs incurred with traditional productive silviculture. A particular advantage available to "Kyoto" foresters will be the ability to derive a return for carbon stored progressively, recognising that the time cost of money makes such income a significant competitive advantage.
- Kyoto foresters will be at a distinct competitive advantage in international forest products markets relative to non-Kyoto foresters. At some carbon price, the value of forestry will be determined by its carbon store value with traditional wood products possibly becoming a by-product."
- "Only recognising carbon sequestration in Kyoto forests will provide a disincentive for existing forest owners to replant on land currently used for forestry."
