Preface
This study was commissioned by MAF in response to a direction from Cabinet for a review of the history and basis of the allowance for irrigation opportunities in the Waitaki catchment as provided for by the third schedule of the 1969 Order in Council. The report provides background to current allocation of water in the Waitaki catchment and will help inform future allocation decisions.
The study was undertaken over a relatively short period of time given the wealth of information about the Waitaki catchment and the developments in the Mackenzie basin in particular. MAF would like to thank all those persons who readily provided factual data from their records or gave leads to the source of material, and thank the authors for their grasp of the content and summary of the information. We recognise that there may be gaps in the information or aspects of historical information may have been overlooked in the reporting due to the constraints of time.
The study has been released to the public through this publication and a
companion report containing appendices abstracted from the source material.
Copies of the companion report are available by emailing
LIBCD@maf.govt.nz . If any person wishes
to review the source material for themselves it is available for viewing at MAF
