Purpose
For Ministers to gain an understanding of how water infrastructure could contribute to the Government's infrastructure development programme through learning about the situation and opportunities for developing new, and upgrading existing water supply infrastructure in Canterbury and Otago.

Outcomes to date
A senior policy analyst from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) has been seconded to work with the Canterbury Water Management Strategy until the completion of the study in June 2009.
Minister Carter is taking a paper to Cabinet in mid-February seeking agreement to change MAF's Community Irrigation Fund criteria, in order to provide funding for strategic water studies
